Advancing Mental Health: National Symposium Sparks Dialogue and Action

The Ministry of Health & Wellness, in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Public Hospitals Authority (PHA), the Mental Health Programming Unit, and the Bahamas Psychological Association, hosted a pivotal Mental Health Symposium on January 23, 2025, at the Atlantis Resort.

This event brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and advocates to address key issues in mental health and wellness. Major topics included:

  • Implementation of the Mental Health Act
  • Suicide prevention strategies
  • Care for vulnerable and at-risk populations
  • Destigmatizing mental illness in Bahamian communities

Minister of Health & Wellness, Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, emphasized the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that mental health is prioritized equally with physical health in national planning and services.

The symposium marked a crucial step forward in efforts to integrate mental health into national policy frameworks and improve support networks for individuals and families across The Bahamas. It also signaled stronger collaboration among stakeholders working to build a more compassionate and responsive mental healthcare system.
